The Black Hen Roadshow | Vol. 4

Stephen Fearing, Catherine MacLellan, Oh Susanna and Steve Dawson

The acclaimed Black Hen Roadshow is back, and better than ever. Coming to stages across Canada in the spring of 2020, this fourth incarnation of the travelling revue features one of our best line-up of artists yet. It’s going to be an evening of unique collaborations and authentic musical entertainment like no other, cementing the Roadshow as one of the finest touring showcases of contemporary roots music in the country.

Steve Dawson and his Black Hen label need no introduction to Canadian roots music fans. A musician’s musician in the truest sense, he is both a highly sought after producer and in demand performer. His unique voice on the slide guitar, pedal steel and many other instruments has made Steve one of the busiest sidemen and session players in Canada. Currently residing in Nashville, where he runs his Henhouse Studio and Black Hen Music, now entering its 21st year of releasing some of the finest roots music from Canada. Lately Steve has been recording and working on projects with Matt Andersen, Birds of Chicago, and Big Dave McLean to name just a few of his many collaborators. Known for bringing the best out of everyone he works with, the multiple Juno Award winner and renowned guitar slinger couldn’t be more excited about taking this incredible group of musicians on the road. “Each of these powerhouse performers has their own unique artistic voice, and having, them all together on stage at once is guaranteed to create plenty of musical magic.”

Oh Susanna has a voice that can pierce a heart of stone. Her superbly crafted songs often tell stories of troubled souls who rebel against their circumstances to attain a quiet dignity. These are tales that look into our beautifully flawed human hearts. Her superbly crafted songs often tell stories of troubled souls who rebel against their circumstances to attain a quiet dignity. These are tales of longing and love, of small town joys and pains, of our simple feelings and strong passions. These are tales that look into our beautifully flawed human hearts. Performing since 1996, Oh Susanna has released eight critically acclaimed and award-winning albums. This year marks the 20th anniversary of her folk-noir full-length debut Johnstown.

Stephen Fearing’s music is a mesmerizing blend of roots, folk, and pop. Co-founder of Canadian roots-rock supergroup Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, he is a beguiling teller of tales and master guitarist who delights audiences throughout North America, the UK, and Europe. A multi JUNO winner, his 11th solo album (Every Soul’s a Sailor) was named Worldwide Album of the Year by Blues & Roots Radio and earned him Contemporary Singer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Fearing is an alluring entertainer – heartbreaking, expansive, and full of mirth – with a clear, honorable voice that lifts you out into his wide world and brings you back home to yourself.

Catherine MacLellan has become one of Canada’s finest and favourite singer-songwriters. She’s worked diligently at her craft, releasing a series of remarkable, creative albums, culminating in the Juno Award-winning“The Raven’s Sun” from 2014. Most impressively, she has chosen to carve out her career path without trading on her family name. That’s pretty hard to do, when your father is one of the country’s most famous songwriters. Gene MacLellan wrote two worldwide, multi-million selling smash hits: “Snowbird” by Anne Murray, and “Put Your Hand in the Hand” by Ocean.  But now, that’s changed. MacLellan has gone from shying away from those songs to fully embracing them, with a stunning new album celebrating her father’s musical legacy. “If It’s Alright With You – The Songs of Gene MacLellan” contains 13 of her father’s most famous compositions, songs that propelled him to fame nearly 50 years ago. With her grace and charm, Catherine MacLellan has captivated audiences since her 2004 solo debut.

With busy first call upright bassist Jeremy Holmes by his side, Steve Dawson will lead this remarkable collection of renowned artists through two killer sets of authentic and inspiring music, that is sure to be remembered as one of the best shows of the season. The first set will consist of each headliner taking their turn playing songs with Steve and Jeremy in support and the second set will see the entire entourage take the stage to play a full set of collaborative group numbers.
